Youth Ministry Resource: Coloring Outside the Lines

This lesson originally appeared at YMtoday.com.  You can find all my YMtoday.com articles and resources at my author page.

1 coloring book page per student
enough crayons for everyone to share

Have each student color a picture.  Give your group plenty of time to color and complete their picture.  Allow them to sit and talk with others while they color.

Discussion Questions

Depending on the size of your group, you may want to break the group up into smaller groups for discussion to allow more people to participate. Six to eight students in a discussion group is ideal.

Invite students to share their picture with the group.

  • Who colored inside the lines?
  • Did anyone add anything to the picture that was not there originally?
  • Why did you color inside the lines?
  • Did the lines on the page help you to create a beautiful picture or did they limit what you created?
  • How are the lines like boundaries?
  • What boundaries exist in your life?
  • What is the purpose of having boundaries?
  • Do boundaries allow you to live more fully or do they limit the way you live?

Scripture Reflection

2 Corinthians 6:11 – The Message

We have spoken frankly to you Corinthians; our heart is wide open to you. There is no restriction in our affections, but only in yours. In return—I speak as to children—open wide your hearts also.

What boundaries does God place on our lives?
